Telefónica looks to tap in to digital environment

Telefónica has released a company statement outlining its commitment to reinforce its position as a global player in the market and establish a scope in the new digital environment.

It said it aims to “actively participate in the digital world” by scaling the opportunities offered by industrial alliances, through the creation of a new business unit, named Telefonica Digital. This will look to drive innovation and expand the company’s digital service portfolio with a presence in London, Madrid, São Paulo, Silicon Valley and strategic hubs in Asia.

A large part of the business unit will have a significant focus on the development of an R&D platform, with over 2,500 skilled professions brought in from a vertical sector background charged with developing the new initiatives.

The company will also create a global resources operating unit, to “drive Telefonica’s transformation into a fully global company”. It is clear the company is looking to enhance its over-the-top service portfolio, with a specific drive towards the development of video, e-health, financial services, cloud and M2M on a global scale. The company confirmed it is open to partnership to achieve an enhanced portfolio in this space.

There has been a significant drive by telecoms operators to enhance their over-the-top platform in the past year as they look to add value to network infrastructure. To read more on the subject look out for the feature on Carrying Content in the upcoming September issue of Capacity magazine.
