NTT DoCoMo partners with Gemalto

Japan’s largest mobile group NTT DoCoMo has partnered with digital security company Gemalto to develop its LTE technology solution Xi.

Xi launched late last year to become Japan’s first LTE wireless connectivity solution and presently covers Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, with plans to reach 70% of the Japanese population by 2015. NTT has partnered with Gemalto to use its Universal Integrated Circuit Cards (UICC), specifically designed for LTE to add more security and reliability to DoCoMo’s multimedia services. DoCoMo’s customers are renowned to expect a high quality of service and the company has stringent quality and performance specifications.

“DoCoMo is leading the introduction of LTE in Japan and Gemalto is ideally placed to bring the latest in LTE technology, says Tan Teck-Lee, president at Gemalto Asia. “Working together, we will drive innovative solutions and services to enrich DoCoMo’s subscriber experience.”

Gemalto has developed a range of solutions in the security space and partnered with a range of wireless operators, banks and enterprises to offer authentication services, smart banking cards and developed solutions for machine to machine communications.

DoCoMo expects more than 15 million of its mobile subscribers will be equipped with LTE UICC by 2014.
