Lightpath is to undertake a 75-mile expansion of its fibre network west of its Boston metro footprint.

The additional 75 route miles of network will bring the total size of the Lightpath network in the Boston metropolitan area to 200+ route miles.

“As Lightpath continues to invest in the Greater Boston market, this latest network expansion will serve major business centres to the west of the city, while also adding access to critical data centres along the path,” said Chris Morley, CEO of Lightpath.

“Expanding to the west of Boston really complements our existing 150 route miles of network in the region.”

The expansion will see the deployment of new, high-count fibre along the I-90 corridor (the longest Interstate Highway in the US) between Boston and Marlborough, and its construction is planned in two phases.

Phase 1 of the build (outlined in yellow on map above) is due to be completed in 2022, while Phase 2 (in red on map) is expected to be completed in 2023. Once operational, the new fibre will add eight new municipalities to the Lightpath network delivering a serviceable market of 2,000+ organisations.

“This region is rich with customers who demand high performance connectivity – from the technology sector, to healthcare, education, and other industries," said Mike Papell, director of Boston sales for Lightpath.

"Lightpath is prepared to work closely with customers in these markets to provide them with the custom connectivity solutions that they need.”

The network expansion will offer two geographically diverse routes between Boston and the west as well as connect to a number of data centres including 34 St. Martin Drive in Marlborough and 128 1st Avenue in Needham.

On top of this soon to be deployed infrastructure, customers will have access to Lightpath solutions, including dark fibre, Optical Transport of up to 800Gbps, Ethernet of up to 10Gbps, Internet Access of up to 100Gbps, Private Networks, cloud connectivity, Voice, Security Solutions, as well as other Managed Services.

Lightpath's network is comprised of over 18,000 routes miles of network in Greater Boston and New York Metro connecting over 12,000 locations, 75+ data centres, and seven cable landing stations.
