Jisc selects Neos Networks for NW fibre network

Neos Networks has been chosen by Jisc to deliver a new dark fibre network spanning the North-West of the UK.

The new network will replace Jisc’s existing Janet North network and will provide gigabit capabilities to all the sites, with some seeing a ten-fold speed increase.

The contract was awarded following a tendering process and is the latest installment in Jisc’s ongoing overhaul and rationalisation of 15 regional networks connected to the organisation’s national backbone infrastructure.

Pete Asman, MD of public sector and enterprise for Neos Networks said: “Our relationship with Jisc goes back some 20 years and we are very pleased to take on this latest rebuild to significantly upgrade the Janet network in the North-West of England.

“Traffic on the network continues to grow exponentially, and the new gigabit fibre capability will ensure that Jisc stays ahead of the requirement in terms of speed, capacity and future growth for its member universities, colleges and research centres.”

Juniper unveils SSR tech with new SD-WAN capabilities

Juniper Networks has announced that its customers and partners can now fully deploy, configure and operate the company’s Session Smart Router (SSR) technology via the Mist cloud and AI engine.

The company says this represents a major step forward in the Juniper AI-driven enterprise across wired access, wireless access and SD-WAN domains.

Sudheer Matta, VP of products at Juniper: “Juniper is executing on a simple vision – AI-driven operations deliver the best user experiences from client to cloud.”

“Nowhere is this more important than in the WAN edge, so Juniper has put considerable energy into advancing the first truly AI-driven SD-WAN solution born in the modern cloud.

“SSR is key to this mission, as it brings unique simplicity, scale, security and performance to WAN edge environments. Combined with our award-winning wireless and wired portfolios driven by Mist AI, this enables the best end-to-end experiences across the board.”

Vodafone, Qualcomm and Thales team for iSIM

Vodafone has teamed with Qualcomm and Thales to demonstrate a working smartphone featuring iSIM – a technology that enables the functionality of a SIM card to be integrated into a device’s processor.

This, the companies say, will pave the way for commercialisation of the technology which could be rolled out in a host of new devices that will use iSIM to connect to mobile services.

The proof of concept demonstration took place in Europe in Samsung’s R&D labs and was based on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G.

Alex Froment-Curtil, chief commercial officer, Vodafone, said: “Our aim is to create a world where every device connects seamlessly and simply to each other, and the customer has complete control. The iSIM, combined with our remote management platform, is a major step in this direction, allowing devices to be connected without a physical SIM or dedicated chip, making connectivity to many objects – the promise of the connected IoT world – a reality.

“It will enable our customers to enjoy the ease of multiple accounts on one device, while from an operator’s point of view, help eliminate the need for separate SIM cards and the additional plastic this consumes.

Optiva establishes R&D centre in India

Optiva has announced a new R&D facility in Bengaluru, India as it looks to accelerate telecom BSS innovation.

The company has already tripled the size of its R&D team over the past 12 months and the opening of its latest facility follows on from one it had opened in Belfast in 2021.
