Calls to and from Telefónica’s mobile customers in some parts of rural Germany are now being backhauled by satellite, following a deal with Intelsat

Telefónica Germany, which operates under the O2 brand, is now using the Intelsat’s CellBackhaul managed service to bring 4G LTE mobile to customers in some of its most rural coverage areas.

Enrique Macho, head of satellite services business unit in Telefónica Global Solutions, said: “This is a key project in the region for Telefonica Global Solutions to continue being a reference as satellite cellular backhaul provider. And it will allow to provide 4G connectivity in a fast and cost-efficient way in those places where terrestrial solutions are not viable.”

The satellite company said that its Intelsat CellBackhaul is an end-to-end managed service recently launched for Europe. It “proves an ideal solution because it helps [mobile operators] of any size to expand 4G mobile coverage”, said the company.

Rhys Morgan, regional VP of Europe and MENA sales at Intelsat, said: “We look forward to a long and productive partnership with Telefónica Global Solutions, helping them quickly and cost-effectively expand their coverage to meet demand and bring connectivity into areas previously considered unreachable or unprofitable.”

Morgan said that the service Intelsat Epic high-throughput satellites. They “can help [mobile operators] of any size expand coverage or build resiliency into their existing networks”, he added.
