The UK government has revealed that it has committed £250m of investment to support and accelerate OpenRAN architecture.

The statement was released on the Gov.UK website and confirmed that open network architecture will be vital in enhancing the security and resilience of networks.

As such, the government added 35% of the UK mobile network traffic will be carried over OpenRAN architecture by 2030.

With its investment, the UK government says it is committed to delivering its Diversification Strategy to build a lasting and sustainable supply for the “infrastructure that underpins our digital economy”.

It also revealed that following a recommendation from the Diversification Taskforce, it is planning to switch off 2G and 3G mobile networks by 2033 at the latest.

The statement added: “We welcome that some individual operators will switch off their networks, particularly their 3G networks, earlier than this date, and will announce their own plans about when and how they intend to do this.

“The Government welcomes the responsible switch off of these networks, and will continue to work with network operators to ensure a smooth transition that meets the needs of business users and consumers, including vulnerable groups.”
