Saudi Telecom Co is investing US$400 million to build the "largest cloud-enabled data centre in the region".

According to its press announcement the telco is implementing the third phase of its data centre strategy with a facility that has an allocated land area of more than 180,000 square metres, according to a statement.

The resulting data centre will be "the largest cloud-enabled data centre in the region".

The first phase of the project completed in 2019 and the second "already is in the final commissioning stage".

STC’s wider data-centres programme consists of 16 data facilities in six cities, the statement added.

In January, STC launched three new facilities – one each in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al-Madina – with an investment of $266.6 million.

“We have big plans for our data centres to become a gateway for the MENA CTO Haithem Alfaraj said in the statement. “STC is geared up to grow-on-demand.”

STC said its latest project would support the oil rich kingdom as it "seeks to become a centre for digitalisation". In July the government of Saudi Arabia said it is investing $18 billion in data centres that will boost the kingdom's capacity by 1.3GW.
