TIM Brasil and Huawei ink MoU on Curitiba 5G City

TIM Brasil and Huawei have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a 5G City in Paraná, Curitiba in Brazil.

The aim of the collaboration is to create a smart city through 5G networks, predict the evolution of technology, monitor networks, and improve user experience. Under the terms of the agreement, the deal is for two years with the option to extend.

"This project is one of the steps for TIM to expand 5G services and become one of the major operators in the world," said Leonardo Capdeville, CTIO of TIM Brasil.

"TIM is working with Huawei to further develop 5G in Brazil to launch the 5G City project. Curitiba is most innovative city in Brazil and South America, we are excited to work on such a project in Curitiba that can greatly affect economic development for the whole country."

The first test is due to be completed by December 2023 and will see the two companies further develop 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks.

Specifically, TIM and Huawei are working together to build the world's largest Massive MIMO (M-MIMO) network, that extends the signal transmission range using a large number of antennas and helps deliver data with higher quality.

For the 5G City project, the M-MIMO network can maximise the 5G transmission speed with ultra-low latency.

"We are glad to have this opportunity to work with TIM to develop a high quality 5G network in Curitiba," said Cao Ming, vice president of the wireless product line at Huawei.

"Our aim is to help TIM lead the industry in the development of 5G networks. Huawei and TIM are both pursuing innovation and success. I believe this will be another successful project in Brazilian telecommunications."

As part of the 5G City project the two will implement wide 5G coverage for the city of Curitiba. In addition to monitoring the network, the project will develop devices and solutions to provide high-quality services with lower energy consumption and cost.
