Raxio Group has invested in the first carrier-neutral Tier III data centre in Ivory Coast as it looks to expand its African footprint.

The data centre developer and operator has revealed it will invest in ‘Raxio Abidjan’, which will be the latest facility of Raxio’s expanding network of them across Africa.

Earlier this year, Raxio moved into Mozambique as part of its expansion and will now extend this to Ivory Coast with the development of the new data centre.

Raxio Abidjan is being developed at the Ivory Coast Village of Innovation and Technology and will be located around 30 kilometres from the city centre of Abidjan.

The data centre is set to be commissioned in 2023 and will be the fifth of Raxio’s portfolio. It will be developed in collaboration with Master Power Technologies and will deliver colocation capacity and cross-connection service in the region.

Robert Mullins, CEO of Raxio Group said: “Ivory Coast is a true hub in the region and our decision to build the country’s first Tier III carrier neutral facility falls squarely within our strategy and furthers our expansion efforts.

“With all the developments across the broader digital infrastructure sector here, it is a truly exciting time to be a part of this ongoing transformation.

“Our facility will be operated by a team of local highly skilled Ivorians accredited with industry-standard certifications and we expect Raxio Abidjan to be a strong driver of both direct and indirect employment in the local technology sector.”

According to the company digital transformation in Ivory Coast has continued to accelerate with internet penetration at 46.8% and mobile penetration reaching 139.1%.

Upcoming subsea cable landings and investments in infrastructure will contribute to reducing the cost of internet access ensuring wider availability.

The site that the data centre will be built on is supported by a redundant power supply and offers domestic and international connectivity.

From this location, Raxio says it will be serving customers in the Abidjan and wider UEMOA region at a time when digital transformation, data consumption and connectivity are on the rise.
