PLDT to build first hyperscale facility in Philippines

PLDT is to build a "first of its kind" hyperscale data centre in the Philippines designed to Tier-3 standards and Tier-4 ready once operations begin.

PLDT said the project – that it will execute with ePLDT –  will give the Philippines its "first and biggest" hyperscaler data centre. It will be telco neutral and at least partly sustainable through the use of "green technology". PLDT has not confirmed a specific IT load, but VP and head of ICT business for enterprise, Nico Alcoseba, said the power capacity will exceed that of PLDT's entire 10-facility VITRO portfolio.

Alcoseba said: "We are very optimistic and bullish about the hyperscaler demand in the enterprise sector. To support the growing needs of global technology giants and cloud service providers expanding in the region, we at the PLDT Group are proud to announce that we will be building the first hyperscaler data centre facility in the Philippines.

"This hyperscaler data centre is a first of its kind. It will have more power capacity in one facility versus all our 10 VITRO data centres combined. It will also be designed to be global class in energy efficiency and reliability, and will make use of the latest in green technology," said Alcoseba.

The new facility will plug into PLDT's VITRO Data Center network, the largest network of data centres in the country linked to the 14 international submarine cable systems and one terrestrial system that PLDT connects to for data transit in and out of the Philippines.

In its press announcement, PLDT also noted three new cables that are currently under construction – the Jupiter Cable system, the Apricot Cable, and the Asia Direct Cable – further boosting the diversity and capacity available for these routes.

Alcoseba said: "We at PLDT are continuously enhancing our existing data centres in three main ways. First, we are adding more power capacity per rack to support the dense and high powered equipment of hyperscalers. Second, we're further enhancing the reliability and energy efficiency of our data centre facilities. And last, we're also looking for ways to deliver Renewable Energy to support the carbon neutrality commitments of these companies."
