Jeddah Internet Exchange (JEDIX), an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) for the Middle East has recorded multiple new maximum traffic peaks.

According to the company, JEDIX has achieved weekly new traffic peaks this month, with the latest peak topping 175Gbps.

The news comes as the number of networks joining the Saudi Arabian facility doubles. Powered by the London Internet Exchange (LINX), JEDIX was launched with Saudi Telecom (STC) back in 2018 to create a platform for networks to interconnect and exchange traffic.

STC onboarded LINX to help deliver on its mandate to establish Saudi Arabia as the key hub for telecoms connectivity in the area as part of its Saudi Vision 2030. For its part, LINX is responsible for delivering the technical solutions at JEDIX, deploying the renown disaggregated network solution that mirrors LINX’s LON2 network configuration in London.

“We are really pleased with the progress made this year, the JEDIX customer list has doubled and continues to grow," said Halil Kama, senior interconnection advisor at LINX.

"It’s been a challenging time, growing a new exchange during a pandemic, however, the reliance on digital services and infrastructure has been highlighted further and we are really seeing a growing interest in JEDIX for sure.”

The latest figures from Research and Markets show that a pre-Covid-19 assessment showed that the value of the region's B2C E-Commerce industry was expected to grow by more than 20% year on year in 2020 from 2019.

However, after the onset of Covid-19 sales volume surged even more and were estimated to almost double from 2020 to 2025. Just two countries in the region, UAE and Saudi Arabia controlled a sizable portion of the market, accounting for more than 70% of the total in 2020.

The JEDIX facility interconnects carriers, cloud and content providers and also local ISPs and enterprise networks from the STC data centre in Jeddah, MG1.

In related news, March 2019 saw STC and LINX annouce that Limelight has provided a Letter of Intent that will take the first 100GE port on JEDIX.
