Equipment vendor Mavenir has announced a partnership with HCL Technologies that will help speed the move to open radio access networks (O RAN).

The company, which specialises in network systems testing, says the new partnership will advance its work to meet the needs of ORAN customers as the industry continues to grow.

In particular, Mavenir and HCL will aid in simplifying testing and validation for vendors and operators of remote radiohead units (RRUs), one of the techniques used to disaggregate the building blocks of mobile networks in the world of open RAN.

Mavenir’s Puneet Sethi (pictured), who runs the company’s RAN business unit, said: “We are directly addressing requests from customers and partners to speed the integration of new RRU products. The growing scale of the O-RAN industry now demands such a model.”

His comments were supported by HCL’s Rajiv Shesh, who runs engineering and R&D services. “The Mavenir-HCL partnership helps accelerate the adoption of O-RAN in the market, bringing a new suite of product offerings to [service providers] and enterprises alike.”

He added: “HCL is bringing together many decades of network testing experience, 5G expertise, state of the art lab facilities and advanced automation tools to validate the interoperability between Mavenir and RRU partners.”

The companies said that vendors can now work directly with HCL to access O-RAN interfaces to support the expansion of the radio ecosystem and establish a self-sustaining RRU business model for 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, massive MIMO, millimetre wave as well as small cell and indoor radios.

Sethi said: “As more O-RAN RRU products become available and RRU partners are enabled to respond rapidly to their customers, [telcos] worldwide will be able to take advantage of the full range of their spectrum assets and benefit from the rapidly accelerating RRU ecosystem.”
