HMN Tech confirms the launch of the Hainan to Hong Kong Express (H2HE) subsea cable that features the world’s first 16 fibre pair repeatered system.

With H2HE has completed the system commissioning and testing and is now ready for service, connecting Hainan Province, Guangdong Province, and Hong Kong SAR, spanning 675km in length. As such, the network creates a direct connection between Hainan and Hong Kong, supporting Hainan as an emerging interconnection hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

The 16-fibre pair cable design incorporates HMN’s next-gen space-division multiplexing (SDM) technology to achieve a system capacity of over 300Tbps, the equivalent of transmitting 57,000 high-definition movies every second.

"We are delighted to partner with forward-thinking customers such as China Mobile, to successfully deliver the first 16 fibre pair submarine cable system that is a milestone in the industry," said Ma Yanfeng, executive vice president at HMN Tech.

"HMN Tech remains committed to developing reliable innovative technology that not only enhances our value proposition but also promotes industry evolution and accelerates the world’s digital transformation.”

This latest technological innovation is hailed as 'milestone' according to HMN, as traditionally the constraints associated with submersible plants have limited systems to eight or twelve fibre pairs. HMN Tech’s R&D team overcame this by improving circuit conversion efficiency, optimising submersible plant structures, and component integration techniques.

In related news, February saw the launch of Maldives Sri Lanka Cable system (MSC) built by HMN Tech. The 840km international subsea system delivers high-speed, low latency connectivity between Hulhumale in the Republic of Maldives and Mount Lavinia in Sri Lanka and the project was completed in a record twelve-month timeframe.

The MSC system uses HMN Tech’s advanced submarine optical amplifiers to provide high output power, reducing span length to facilitate a cost-effective solution.
