Open RAN and small cell specialist Mavenir has added to the responsibilities of its chief strategy officer, Bejoy Pankajakshan, by making him chief technology and strategy officer.

Pankajakshan (pictured), who has been with Mavenir for eight years, will have the task of supporting the company’s vision to deliver a single software-based network that runs on any cloud.

President and CEO Pardeep Kohli said: “Over the last three years, since his appointment as CSO, he has been pivotal to Mavenir’s strategy, investment and M&A activities while providing impeccable technology and product leadership. This noteworthy appointment further solidifies Bejoy’s role in leading the formulation and execution of the company strategy.”

In the last few weeks alone MTN named Mavenir as a partner for open RAN services in Africa; Deutsche Telekom said it would be one of the suppliers for its open RAN town of Neubrandenburg; Orange said it would use the company for its trial “network of the future” in the Brittany town of Lannion; Vodafone said it was working with Mavenir on a small cell solution based on open RAN technology, to provide indoor 4G connectivity for business customers; and Qualcomm said it was developing 4G and 5G chips with Mavenir for cloud-based open RAN.

Pankajakshan spent 10 years in technology roles at Sprint and then two years at T-Mobile US – before it merged with Sprint – and joined Mavenir in 2013.

He said: “Today, with a rapidly growing team, Mavenir has achieved remarkable milestones for both the company and its global customers. I cannot think of a more important and exciting time to take on such a significant new role. I welcome new challenges and look forward to helping Mavenir realise our bold vision.”

He trained at Kerala University in India, followed by Kansas State University and Southern Methodist University in the US.
