Mexican telco Telmex has opened a new data centre in Cancun to take advantage of the subsea fibre links that land there and will be landing in the area.

The location for the facility, first announced last year, was chosen as Cancun (in the state of Quintana Roo) is directly fibre network-linked to Florida, US.

There are additional forward links on to the Caribbean and Europe too, benefiting Telmex's international customers.

Cancun is also due to be a landing point for the Ecuador-to-Florida Aurora subsea cable, the Colombia-to-Florida Caribbean Express (CX) cable and the Florida GigNet-1 cable.

Using Cancun, Telmex will offer both hosting and cloud services to the public sector and enterprises via its Triara business unit.

Telmex has other data centres located in capital Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Querétaro.

Bernardo Cueto, director of the Institute for Development and State Financing for Quintana Roo, said: “Telmex's commitment to Quintana Roo will allow for the development of new business opportunities that will support the strengthening of our economy and the generation of more and better sources of employment.”

The cost of the Cancun facility and its specifications haven't been made public yet. Telmex is a wholly-owned subsidiary of América Móvil.
