EdgeConneX has broken ground on a new 8MW edge data centre near Barcelona to help address the cloud service and colocation needs of local firms.

The 7,600 sq m (82,000 sq ft) facility is located in the Sant Boi de Llobregat region, just 15km from Barcelona city centre.

The multi-tenant data centre is expected to be ready for service in Q4 2021, with a “global IT services provider and systems integrator” as its first anchor tenant, said EdgeConneX.

The facility will host customer applications as well as provide local, cloud and content access services.

“The Sant Boi region and Barcelona is in a position to be the next great digital hub,” said Lluïsa Moret Sabidó, mayor of Sant Boi de Llobregat. “The EdgeConneX facility will not only provide necessary local access and connectivity to cloud and content providers for our growing business community, but will provide new jobs and opportunities, continuing to lift our local and regional economy.”

Daniel Bizo, an analyst at 451 Research, added: “Recent investments in subsea cable projects and additional data centre capacity have placed Barcelona, like Madrid, on a trajectory that, if sustained, will elevate the metro's position from that of a local hub to one of much greater significance in the global network of digital infrastructure.”

Dick Theunissen, managing director for EMEA at EdgeConneX, said: “We are continuing our push to bring the edge closer to those that need it most, where they need it most.”

Earlier this year, EdgeConneX opened the first of two data centres in Santiago, Chile. That 7MW facility is being used by Oracle to help deliver its cloud services to the region.
