American Tower has confirmed the launch of its Edge Data Center solution available to businesses across the Greater Pittsburgh area.

The company’s latest edge collocation facility in Pittsburgh is tenant ready and marks American Tower’s sixth edge data centre across the country.

Its location was selected as the second-largest city Pennsylvania, delivering additional connectivity options to a range of industries in Pittsburgh, including manufacturing, healthcare and information technology, to name a few.

“The vast combination of industries in the Pittsburgh area that require increased network elasticity and lower latency make our newest facility an ideal location for an Edge Data Center,” said Whitney Pesot, product manager of US Innovation for American Tower.

“The increasing use of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices within the manufacturing and healthcare industries is creating more demand for fast connectivity closer to the edge. The city’s emerging artificial intelligence and robotics industry will also heavily rely on the low-latency environment edge facilities provide.”

The 360 sqft facility offers eight customer cabinets, 20 quarter-cabinet lockers, and three full cabinets, accommodating up to 23 customers. The multitenant edge data centre is also centrally located to give customers easy access to their IT infrastructure.

American Tower Edge Data Centers deliver power distribution, monitoring, security, and cooling in an all-in-one edge solution. Using the ground space of the company’s existing tower infrastructure, American Tower can quickly develop and scale new facilities on demand.

Additionally, all locations are supported by a 24/7/365 network operations centre and a range of solutions that enable companies to easily scale.

In related news, earlier this month Infinera and American Tower completed the first point-to-multipoint coherent optical transmission in a carrier network environment in Latin America.

Using Infinera’s XR optics technology the field trial was carried out over American Tower’s Passive Optical Network (PON) network in Colombia.
