Realme CEO Madhav Sheth has said the firm aims to democratise access to 5G in India through its range of low-cost handsets.

Sheth, who is the VP of Realme and CEO of Realme India and Europe, was quoted as saying: "Realme aims to be the 5G populariser in India, in Europe and other global markets.

"To achieve this, we will introduce 5G-enabled smartphones at democratised prices to enable users to experience the latest processor with much-enhanced capability in terms of power management, display optimisation, camera support, gaming performance, etc, and get consumers future-ready for 5G.

"While the primary benefits of 5G are enhanced connectivity and speed, I believe it has the power to revolutionise industries such as education and healthcare and turn every household into a smart home," he added.

Sheth's comments followed the launch of the Realme X7 series last week and were shared in an interview with The Indian Express. Realme was the first to launch a 5G enabled handset in India when its X50 pro debuted in early 2020.

Sheth continued: “With everything moving online – work, education, payments – the dependency of consumers on technology has increased,” says Sheth. “Consumers nowadays are more inclined towards adopting a connected and tech-empowered lifestyle and 5G is bound to play a pivotal role in building this lifestyle for them.”

Following the lack of dedicated 5G spectrum and fibre backhaul for the deployment of 5G networks it is though handset costs will be the next barrier to 5G adoption across India.

VP of analysis at Opensignal, Ian Fogg, said: "Cheaper 5G phones are an important enabler for the operators in India to launch a 5G service and get a reasonable uptake of people on that service. If you think back to Jio's 4G launch one of the things they did there was launch the Jio phone to enable that service."

Capacity will have more on India's 5G progress in the February/ March edition
