Norwegian construction company Veidekke has signed an agreement with atNorth (formerly Advania Data Centers) for the construction of a new sustainable data centre in Stockholm.

The project is a turnkey contract and will be divided into several stages. The company revealed that the first stage has a value of approximately $6.4 million (SEK 54 million) and is planned to be put into operation in December 2021.

The project, named Stockholm SWE01: SIF DC, includes the construction of a 6400 sqm data centre with an associated office.

The data centre will be located in Kista, an ICT area in Stockholm. It will be atNorth's first facility outside Iceland, where the company currently operates two modern data centres.

“For atNorth, SIF DC is a real milestone, as we are expanding outside Iceland. Our goal is to become a world leader in HPC, high-performance computing, and related co-location services,” said atNorth's CEO Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson.

“We are really looking forward to being able to provide more computing power and new services to our demanding customers. This means that they can reduce their costs, develop new products faster and solve even more complex problems than today.”

Once the data centre is in use, the excess heat from the servers will be used for local heating, according to the company.

Through a collaboration with Stockholm Exergi, the surplus heat will be taken care of in a combined heat and power plant located next to the data centre.

Heat pumps will use the heat to raise the temperature of incoming water to 65 ° -80 ° C before transferring it to the local district heating network.

“We thank atNorth for the trust and look forward to a close and value-creating collaboration,” said Niklas Bergvall von Hellens, work manager at Veidekke Bygg Stockholm.

“This type of project where we get in early gives us the opportunity to optimise the product and progress to create good project results for everyone.”
