Liquid Telecom is to build a data centre in the Nigerian city of Lagos, to be run by a new CEO for the company’s operations in the country.

Wole Abu (pictured) joins Liquid Telecom and Africa Data Centre (ADC) in Nigeria from Pan African Towers, and before that Airtel Nigeria, where he was VP of sales.

Harare-based Liquid Telecom said that the new data centre will be the biggest outside South Africa. The company has already acquired “a premium piece of land in Lagos” for it.

Mohamed Abdel Bassit, Liquid Telecom’s regional CEO for the Middle East and west Africa, said that the expansion and appointment coincided with the company’s east-to-west link going live.

It is important, he added, “that we start working with businesses in Nigeria to develop the local telecom and technology ecosystem and also establish ourselves as the go-to data centre provider”.

The company said it “will address the growing demand for cloud storage and digital services on the continent”.

Bassit added: “Abu will be responsible for overseeing the strategic growth of ADC’s operations in this new market. [He] brings over 14 years of experience in the telecommunications industry,” and this will be important “as we continue to expand our fibre network reach on the African continent.”

Abu said: “Since the launch of the first Africa Data Centre in 2018, I have seen the data centre team grow their operations by leaps and bounds to cater to the rapidly developing cloud ecosystem on the African continent.”

He added: “I also look forward to showcasing Liquid Telecom’s commitment to Nigeria’s digital transformation journey which is linked to staying true to our belief that every individual has the right to be connected.”
