A new $40 million data centre that will serve the Chicago area has launched in the north west of Indiana.

According to the Associated Press, reporting from the (Northwest Indiana) Times, the new 105,000 sqft Digital Crossroads data centre in Hammond will house the data for a wide range of national companies.

In addition, it has been designed to meet the growing need for data storage, such as for bandwidth intensive services such as video and music streaming.

The facility currently employs approximately 17 workers and this number could grow as the centre expands.

It was on the site of a former coal-fired power plant along Lake Michigan that closed in 2012 and was credited as one of the worst polluters in the Chicago area.

With approximately half of the site leased for servers, the facility will be connected via a fibre-optic route to downtown Chicago.

Local leaders have praised the project saying it will attract more high-tech companies to the area.
