T-Mobile switches on 5G services in Poland

T-Mobile customers in Poland can now connect to the country’s 5G network, with services to be rolled out to six million people in 46 locations by the end of June.

T-Mobile, which operates 1,600 base stations across Poland, is currently granting 5G network access free of charge, and for customers with MagentaBIZNES plans existing data transmission speed limits will be lifted. Further promotions will be announced as development of the network progresses, “to take full advantage of the growing potential of this new technology”.

Hailed as the start of an “economic revolution” for Poland, T-Mobile said the technology “will result in the creation of new sectors, companies and jobs that will serve as an important element of the development of the entire society”.

Andreas Maierhofer, president of the -Mobile Polska management board, said: “I am proud to announce the commercial launch of the 5G network at T-Mobile. We do not want to wait for the future, but to create it, which is why we are now giving our clients the opportunity to join 5G and become part of the first stage of this technological revolution. We do not limit ourselves to one small area, but we launch the service on a bigger scale

“5G offers a unique range of possibilities for clients and our goal is to enable users to take advantage of them as they expect. Today, we are building a solid foundation for the development of this technology, in order to offer clients the full potential of 5G technology in the following months and years, based on new frequencies,” he added.

Poland’s first commercial 5G service was launched in May by Plus, operated by Polkomtel, using Ericsson RAN and core equipment. In July, Orange is expected to launch services across the country and later in the year establish a fibre company.

However, Poland has faced some setbacks of late, after moving to dismiss the head of its telecommunications regulator under the guise of anti-crisis legislation drafted to tackle Covid-19.
