Carlo Melis joins Three UK as chief network officer

Three UK has appointed Carlo Melis to drive its “major enhancements” in 4G and 5G, using the UK’s “leading spectrum portfolio” to enhance the network experience.

The appointment is the third major announcement from Three since the start of the year, when parent company CK Hutchison combined the Three Group’s UK and Ireland operations and appointed Robert Finnegan, CEO of the Irish company, to head Three UK.

Last month, Elaine Carey followed Finnegan to the UK to take up the role of chief commercial officer.

Melis joins Three UK from Wind Tre in Italy, where he has held several senior roles across network and technology integration for the past 14 years, taking responsibility for network integration following the merger of Wind and 3 Italia, implementing a new telco cloud core and the radio access network. 

Three UK COO, Susan Buttsworth, said: “We are delighted to have Carlo join our team. His extensive experience in network strategy and architecture will be vital to delivering the maximum customer benefit from our multibillion investment in technology.”

In his new role Melis will be responsible for what the work to deliver major 4G enhancements and 5G, and using the UK’s “leading spectrum portfolio to enhance the network experience for Three’s customers”.

Melis said: “Three has been on an incredible journey, completely overhauling its network and IT infrastructure and laying the foundations for a 5G network that will dramatically transform the experience for its customers, at the same time as delivering major 4G improvements. I’m looking forward to joining Three, bringing my expertise to build on the great progress already achieved and to deliver a network that will stand the business in good stead long into the future.”
