Only four countries score ‘excellent’ marks in mobile games – report

Mobile games players in Singapore, the Netherlands, Japan and the Czech Republic achieve the best experience from their network providers.

Research from London-based Opensignal shows that those are the only four countries in the world where the experience can be classed as “excellent”. Everywhere else is “good”, “fair”, “poor” or “very poor”, says the research company.

The findings are important because equipment vendors and operators see mobile gaming as a main driver for the take-up of 5G technology, with its faster speed and much lower latency.

A year ago Deutsche Telekom said it was launching edge data centres for 5G mobile gaming. And in October 2015 Orange said its 5G lab would be used to test 5G gaming in the cloud, as well as other applications.

“Across Asia mobile operators are ahead in spotting early opportunities to use multiplayer mobile games to differentiate,” said Ian Fogg (pictured), Opensignal’s VP of analysis.

“This will be more common in the 5G era. Speed alone is not sufficient to offer a great mobile games experience. Instead operators must ensure the small network packets needed for gaming are transmitted quickly, reliably and without interruptions.”

The research records Canada as “good” but the US as “fair”. Turkey, Russia and Saudi Arabia are all “poor”, said Opensignal.
