América Móvil, KT, Rogers, Telstra, Verizon and Vodafone form the 5G Future Forum
América Móvil, KT, Rogers, Telstra, Verizon and Vodafone have come together to create a forum to accelerate the delivery of 5G and mobile-edge computing-enabled solutions.
Together the 5G Future Forum will develop interoperable 5G specifications across the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe. It will focus on specifications that improve speed to market for developers and global enterprises working on 5G-enabled solutions. Additionally, all forum members will develop marketplaces to enhance developer and customer access to 5G as well as to share best practices in technology deployment.
MTN Zambia names Komba Malukutila as chief FinTech officer
Effective as of 1 February, Komba Malukutila will serve as MTN Zambia’s new chief FinTech officer.
Prior to his appointment, Malukutila served as general manager of enterprise business at MTN Zambia.
"Malukutila brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the new role gleaned over a 10-year career within the telecommunications industry with a track-record of driving business strategy for growth, as well as developing high-performing teams," the company said in a statement.
Installation of the DARE1 cable has begun
Djibouti Telecom, Somtel, Telkom Kenya and SubCom confirms that the Djibouti Africa Regional Express 1 (DARE1) subsea cable system has landed in La Siesta Beach (Djibouti) and the marine installation is underway.
Marine operations are scheduled to be complete in March 2020 with the entire system is on track to be ready for provisional acceptance in June 2020.
Eutelsat successfully launches Konnect satellite
Eutelsat has reported the successful launch of its KONNECT satellite into Geostationary Transfer Orbit by Arianespace using an Ariane 5 rocket in Kourou, French Guiana.
"Our congratulations to Arianespace and the Guiana Space Center teams for successfully launching our EUTELSAT KONNECT satellite towards geostationary orbit,” said Rodolphe Belmer, CEO of Eutelsat. “The collaboration between Eutelsat, Thales Alenia Space and Arianespace on this ambitious satellite programme has resulted in a world-first broadband satellite for the African and European continents that demonstrates the suitability of satellite infrastructure as a means to deliver high quality broadband services, contributing to bridging the digital divide within rural areas."
UK government disapproves of Ofcom CEO candidate
The UK Government has refused to approve Ofcom’s choice for CEO after the regulator planned to appoint civil servant Dame Melanie Dawes.
The Government responded saying that it would prefer candidates from outside of Whitehall with a search for the next appointment now underway.
