Vodafone has launched 5G roaming for its customers travelling across Europe.

Effective immediately Vodafone Ireland customers will be able to access 5G roaming in 100 towns and cities across Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK that includes London, Madrid, Munich and Rome.

The news follows an announcement made earlier this year when the company became the first Irish operator to launch commercial 5G in the cities of Cork, Limerick, Dublin, Galway and Waterford.

“At Vodafone, we are aware of the need for accessibility and at no point is that greater than when we are far away from home or work,” said Didier Clavero Perez, technology director of Vodafone Ireland. “We have therefore accelerated the availability of 5G roaming in time for the Christmas holidays. While travelling abroad, our customers will now find it even easier to keep in touch with loved ones at home and colleagues in the office.”

In addition to the roaming, the operator also switched on its 5G network at Dublin Airport making it the first airport in Ireland to enable high-speed 5G connectivity for its visitors.

“Dublin Airport is a hive of economic activity employing over 20,000 people and welcoming 90,000 passengers daily,” added Carl Meehan, head of infrastructure and support at Dublin Airport. “We worked closely with Vodafone to have 5G available at the airport ahead of the busy Christmas season so all our travelling customers and those meeting them will find it easier to stay connected.”

Vodafone’s new 5G network consists of standardised Ericsson 5G, which is being deployed over Vodafone Ireland’s recently acquired 5G spectrum. Using Ericsson Radio System, the network will support many other new technologies - including artificial intelligence, the internet of things, connected cities and self-driving cars.
