Sparkle has expanded its data centre in Istanbul by 300 sq m but reduced the power consumption by 14%.

Revealing the expansion at Capacity Eurasia in Istanbul this week, Sparkle – owned by Italian operator TIM – said the Yenibosna data centre is now “the first green data centre in Turkey, thanks to its energy-efficient power and cooling systems”.

“Today data centres consume more than 2% of the world’s electricity, requiring the implementation of more efficient technologies able to meet the growing demand for services while decreasing energy consumption,” said Sparkle.

The data centre, in a western suburb of Istanbul, is served by Sparkle’s Tier 1-grade global IP transit service Seabone. “It is one of the largest and most important open colocation facilities in Turkey, featuring advanced technologies and sophisticated monitoring systems,” said Sparkle. The company said it was the first in Turkey to introduce lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

The facility (pictured) has been completely restructured and expanded with an additional 300 square metres of white-space area. The cooling capacity is 40% bigger, said the company.

Updates included replacement of the power system with the adoption of energy-efficient technologies for all its components – medium and low voltage transformers, generators, uninterruptible power supplies and batteries – and the introduction of a new cooling system.

Sparkle said its developments “confirm the company’s commitment to offer a full range of integrated ICT solutions and global connectivity to service providers as well as to multinational and domestic enterprises seeking for sustainable, secure and best-in-breed infrastructure for their mission-critical IT systems”.
