Telefónica appoints new Mexico CEO to tackle ‘challenging market’

Telefónica has put a new CEO in place at the head of its Mexican operation, charged with developing what it called “a greater attacking vocation in the challenging Mexican communications market”.

The new CEO is Camilo Aya Caro (pictured), who has spent the last 16 years in the company’s operation in his native Colombia, most recently as head of business-to-consumer marketing.

He replaces Carlos Morales Paulín, who spent 17 years in the group, in Spain, Brazil and Mexico – where he took over as CEO five years ago. He is now “to take on new professional challenges”, outside Telefónica, said the company.

Camilo Aya is an industrial engineer from the Universidad de Los Andes de Bogotá, with an MBA from Columbia Business School in New York. As president and CEO of Telefónica Mexico, he now has “to accelerate the consolidation of Telefónica Movistar as an operator”, said the company.

Camilo Aya joined Telefónica Colombia in 2003 and by 2006 he was director of strategy, regulation and wholesale business, taking on the business-to-consumer marketing role in Bogotá in 2012.

Telefónica said he was responsible for the growth in revenue share in prepaid and postpaid businesses, in the second most concentrated mobile market in Latin America – with Mexico being the most competitive.

He also led the commercial launch of the 4G network and the development of fixed broadband, TV and voice businesses, as well as the launch of the new fibre and IPTV services in Colombia.
