The board of Telekom Slovenije has appointed Matjaž Merkan as its new CEO. He replaces Rudolf Skobe, who left in April.

Lidija Glavina, head of the supervisory board, told local media in Slovenia that his “style of leadership and the vision … will contribute to implementation of the goals and further development of Telekom Slovenije”.

The company, listed on the Ljubljana Stock Exchange, also operates through its subsidiaries on the markets of south-eastern Europe in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and North Macedonia.

Merkan (pictured) will assume his four-year term as CEO in two weeks’ time, on 16 September.

His LinkedIn profile shows that he has no previous experience of the telecoms industry. With a degree in physics, he worked in the lighting industry from 1996 to 2010, and then joined the Weiler Abrasive group, where he was CEO of the Slovenia subsidiary for six years until March 2019.

He told local media that he was confident that Telekom Slovenije “will retain its leading position in the future – including by expanding into new fields”.

He added: “Telekom Slovenije will need to become even more digitalised, advanced and agile. It’s worth betting on the people who comprise the group and who have something to show for themselves even today.”
