Cisco, Superloop partner on 400G subsea cable deployments

Cisco and Superloop have teamed up on two deployments of up to 400G on the INDIGO West cable, from Singapore to Australia, and the INDIGO Central cable, from Perth to Sydney.

INDIGO West and INDIGO Central provide Superloop with the basis for connectivity between its existing metropolitan networks and further expansion into Asia, creating a fully meshed, pan-Asian network to meet growing customer demand across the region.

It was announced in May that the Indigo subsea cable system was ready to be deployed following the completion of the Indigo West and Indigo Central cables. Deployed by a consortium of AARNet, Google, Indosat Ooredoo, Singtel, SubPartners and Telstra, the new system features new spectrum-sharing technology enabling each member to upgrade their networks and make capacity increases on-demand.

Cisco’s NCS 1004 has been deployed on 4,600km of the INDIGO cables, which features a two-fibre pair ‘open cable’ design with new spectrum sharing technology.

"The INDIGO cable system completes the next stage of our Asia-Pac network infrastructure. We are now the sole operator that owns fibre to buildings in Australia, Singapore and HK, placing it at the forefront of optical fibre connection and transmission technologies,” said Ryan Crouch, chief technology officer of Superloop.

“Working with Cisco on the INDIGO cable system was a logical extension of the partnership that helped create our Australian integrated backhaul network to the 121 points of interconnect. We are now truly positioned as the pan-Asia fibre operator to meet growing customer demand across the region.”

Superloop is an independent fibre infrastructure provider designing and operating networks throughout the Asia-Pacific region. It builds critical core infrastructure for wholesale carriers and global content providers requiring infinitely scalable and reliable capacity, on-demand. Through the ability to swap capacity, for access to other international cable systems, it will also open up access to new markets and customers.

The Cisco NCS 1004 is optimised to maximise capacity with a minimum space and power footprint. At 2RU, the system supports up to 4.8Tbps of client and up to 4.8Tbps of trunk traffic. In addition to the subsea applications, the NCS 1004 is also well suited for terrestrial long haul deployments as well as metro data centre interconnect applications.
