Telkom Kenya has appointed Steve Okeyo as the new managing director of its mobile division, succeeding Amer Atwi who has been with the company since 2016.

Speaking on Atwi’s contributions Mugo Kibati,CEO of Telkom Kenya said: “Amer played a strategic role in Telkom’s overall turnaround, during this period, having come with a proven track record in telco leadership, handling dynamic markets in West Africa. He led and was highly instrumental in Telkom’s rebrand from Orange, our revamped distribution network as well as our re-aligned product development strategy. In the last three years, Amer and his team have positioned Telkom as the mobile data services provider of choice.”

Okeyo most recently served as director for regional sales and operations at Safaricom, where he lead various teams to deliver customer growth and revenue.

Prior to this, he also held the position of director for regional sales force effectiveness at Larfarge in Paris. This role involved spearheading a commercial change management programme across 60 global countries. During this time, he also served as a commercial director for the Bamburi and Hima Cement Companies. But Okeyo built a good part of his career at The Coca Cola Company over the space of ten years where he held senior roles including country manager for Uganda.

“Steve joins Telkom at a very exciting phase, bringing with him vast experience and a proven track record in strategy, sales and operations. There is enormous opportunity at Telkom that lies ahead and Steve’s addition to the family will add to the talent pool that is geared to drive our next phase of transformation,” added Kibati.

At the start of the year, Telkom Kenya was reportedly in talks with Bharti Airtel over a potential merger as the two plan to challenge market leader Safaricom.
