Equinix has named Eugene Bergen Henegouwen as its new president of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

In his new role, Henegouwen will oversee the business in the EMEA region, ensuring alignment across all functions to achieve regional business objectives. He will also manage the country managing directors, the regional corporate development team and regional business development teams to ensure the company drives high returns on its investments and accelerates interconnection growth.

“As SVP of Sales in EMEA for the last six years, Eugene has proven himself to be an exceptional leader,” said Karl Strohmeyer, chief customer & revenue officer, Equinix. “I am very pleased that he has accepted this challenge to take the EMEA business and team to the next level. He brings a wealth of business insights, leadership experience and energy that will serve the region, our customers and teams well.”

Henegouwen joined Equinix back in 2013 as senior vice president of sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa. During his tenure revenues for the company tripled in six years, building a strong field sales organisation over 15 countries, a highly successful regional corporate sales team and a full-scale dedicated channel organisation. Before joining Equinix, Henegouwen served as executive vice president and managing director of Syniverse. Under his leadership, Syniverse’s market share in the EMEA region increased by 70% over nine years. He has also held senior leadership positions with the likes of IMC in Boston, AVIO Digital in Redwood City, California, as well as Philips Business Electronics and Philips Telecommunications and Data Systems.

“In my new role as President of EMEA, I am looking forward to working with the more than 2,500 employees that make up our amazing regional team to pursue our collective goals. By pressing our unique advantage, by bringing our best efforts to the company every day, and serving our customers, we can continue to build a company of historical significance,” said Henegouwen.

Henegouwen succeeds Eric Schwartz who served as president of EMEA since 2008 and was recently appointed to chief strategy and development officer, overseeing corporate strategy, corporate development, business development, real estate, capital planning and the company’s hyperscale initiatives. At the time, Karl Strohmeyer, Sara Baack, were promoted to chief customer and revenue officer, chief product officer, respectively.
