Telia Company, TalTech University and Ericsson have launched Estonia’s first 5G network, transmitting its first 4K video live stream from Tallinn Old Town Christmas market.

“We hope to see new and exciting future services and business models built upon 5G. Thus, different stakeholders are welcome to test the possibilities of the new technology at TalTech University. It is the perfect place for this, combining technical knowledge, smart people and cooperation experiences with very different partners. Additionally, 5G technology supports our newly opened NB-IoT network that now has its first commercial user, “said Kirke Saar (pictured), CTO at Telia Estonia.

The 5G network will act as a testbed for Telia’s industry partners and academia, TelTech University students and staff, as well as companies and startups that need fast, high-quality data connectivity to create and test solutions.

“The launch of a 5G network in Estonia using commercial and standardised radio and core products serves as an important step toward launching early commercial 5G services in the country,” said Andrus Durejko, head of Ericsson Estonia. “Building a 5G network in one of Estonia’s most creative environments, TalTech campus, demonstrates Ericsson’s and Telia Company’s joint commitment to drive innovation and the continued digitalisation of Estonia.”

Collaborating with Ericsson and during the demonstration, 5G base stations were installed on the university campus and transmitted 4K live video stream from the Tallinn Old Town Christmas market.

“As far as we know, up until now, 4K has never been transmitted live in Estonia or its neighbouring countries, and our 5G network did an excellent job on transmitting the stream, “continued Saar. Adding that Telia is planning and currently working on launching 5G for its residential customers sometime in 2019.

In December, Telia Carrier, the wholesale carrier arm of Telia Company expanded its global IP backbone with the launch of a new point of presence in Zurich, Switzerland inside of a colozüri.ch data centre.
