The microwave transmission market grew 6% in the first three quarters of 2018 compared with the previous year, driven by mobile backhaul expansion in India.

This was the takeaway from Dell’Oro Group’s Microwave Transmission & Mobile Backhaul Quarterly Report, which looks at the manufacturers’ revenue, ports/radio transceivers shipped, and average selling prices by capacities (low, high and E/V Band) for the backhaul and transmission market.

India saw microwave transmission revenue growth of 37% year-on-year – more than four times the next highest growth, which was in North America and Europe (both 9%). The rest of Asia and Caribbean and Latam both dipped 1% year-on-year, while the Middle East and Africa fell a combined 9%.

Mobile backhaul was the larget application for point-to-point microwave transmission equipment, as it grew 9% year-on-year to $1.8 billion.

The manufacturers leading the way in India were NEC, Huawei, Ceragon, and Ericsson.  NEC and Huawei each held just under 30 percent market share for the nine month period.

“The Microwave Transmission market posted a solid growth in the first nine months of 2018,” stated Jimmy Yu, Vice President at Dell’Oro Group. “This growth was due to solid demand in three principal regions: North America, Europe, and India.  India was especially strong this year, growing 37 percent in the first nine months of the year as operators in the country continued to expand their mobile network with additional LTE capacity.”
