Hong Kong’s HKBN is boosting its fibre download speeds to 2Gbps, for a price equivalent to US $35.50 a month.

The company’s offer, announced last week, includes what HKBN calls “Hong Kong’s first all-in-one Home Gateway” that includes home network security, parental control and home WiFi in what is likely to be one of the lowest prices in the developed world. Upload speed on the connection is 1Gbps, said HKBN.

CTO Gary McLaren said: “Home Gateway is a breakthrough that will take household connectivity experiences to the next level, bringing the benefits of cutting-edge technology, blazing fast 2Gbps fibre, unparalleled home network security and parental control, all in an affordable package.”

McLaren will be speaking at Capacity Asia at 11:00 on Wednesday morning on “Understanding the key ingredients of a successful OTT video service and carrier partnership”.

The 2Gbps is delivered on a single fibre broadband network. Current options in Hong Kong to achieve such a bandwidth use two separate 1Gbps connections, requiring users to connect their devices to the internet via entirely different WiFi networks.

HKBN – formerly called Hong Kong Broadband Network – is quoting HK $278 a month for a 24-month contract, with phone service an extra HK $10 (US $1.27) a month on top. The main price includes TV channels as well as cybersecurity features, from Trend Micro.

Bob Hung general manager for Trend Micro in Hong Kong and Taiwan, said: “Household users tend to overlook the network security in their homes. Blocking attacks at the home network level effectively enhances home security, which is becoming an important new trend for the future.”

According to Trend Micro, in September 2018 Hong Kong faced 995,971 attacks – the company’s fourth highest rating. “In the third quarter of 2018, we detected more than 62 million cyberattacks globally,” said Hung.
