According to reports by Jakarta Globe, the move will strengthen the company’s business in the region and help it capture a larger customer base.
"Google Cloud is committed to serving our customers in Indonesia, where they are advancing rapidly and participating in the digital economy," said Rick Harshman, managing director off Asia Pacific at Google Cloud.
Harshman says that Indonesia is the eighth country in the region to receive a cloud facility, after Mumbai - India, Singapore, Taiwan, Sydney - Australia and Tokyo – Japan.
The news forms part of Google’s $30 billion investment in cloud computing infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region, which it has been doing over the past three years. Google also plans to build cloud facilities in Osaka and Hong Kong.
"We are here to make a long-term investment; [we believe] building infrastructure is also needed to support our growing business here, and we are proud to bring a Google Cloud region to Indonesia," added Harshman.
Singapore is home to the closest cloud facility, which currently serves Google Cloud Platform (GCP) customers in the archipelago.
The Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is a suite of cloud computing services that runs on the same infrastructure Google uses internally for its end-user products, such as Google Search and YouTube. It provides a network of remote servers to manage, store and process data for clients, such as tech firms, e-commerce platforms and online gaming companies.
