The deal between the two will see Tampnet use GTT’s optical transport services to connect its off-shore assets in the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Commenting on the news, Arnt Erling Skavdal, CTO of Tampnet, explained: “The customers we serve in the oil and gas industry have very specific diversity and latency requirements. We chose GTT for its ability to engineer a solution that met our design objectives, including a primary path under 97 milliseconds and customized routing to avoid congestion points in the metro hubs interconnecting our global data centres.”
Tampnet currently serves approximately 240 oil and gas platforms, floating production storage and offloading units, plus exploration rigs.
GTT offers diversely routed wavelengths over two of its three transatlantic cables (GTT Express, GTT North and GTT South), which will link Tampnet’s data centres in Manchester and Slough with its facilities in Houston and Dallas. The solution is built to enable seamless scalability up to 100GE and uses GTT Express, the lowest latency transatlantic cable system.
GTT Express has been designed for latency sensitive industries and it addition to it bypassing the New York region it also provides transatlantic wavelengths into Canada bypassing the US, if need be. In addition, GTT Express is also the only UK cable into Europe that bypasses London.

GTT recently appointed ex-basketballer and NBA legend Julius Erving to its board of directors. Erving is the founder and managing member of Dr J Enterprises and enters the role with over 40 years’ experience as a business executive and entrepreneur.
And only last year, Tampnet entered into a strategic partnership with Bulk Infrastructure enabling connectivity between the two. Specifically the link between both parties will connect the UK and Continental Europe, to Norway’s two data centres the N01 campus and Oslo Internet Exchange.
