Paraguay raises $84m in 700MHz spectrum auction

Millicom's Tigo unit, America Móvil’s Claro and Personal’s Nucleo were the mobile operator winners in Paraguay’s 700MHz spectrum auction, which raised around $84 million.

Tigo acquired three of the seven available blocks of 2x5MHz spectrum for $36.325 million, plus certain social and network coverage obligations.

“This new spectrum will allow us to cost-effectively continue to expand our 4G network in Paraguay and provide high-speed mobile data services to more Paraguayans. We are proud that Tigo is the largest provider of 4G services in Paraguay,” said Jose Perdomo, general manager of Tigo Paraguay.

Mauricio Ramos, CEO of Millicom, added: "We are very pleased with the outcome of the auction. Building a 4G future is central to Millicom's strategy, and gaining 700MHz spectrum in Paraguay allows us to continue to provide advanced digital services to the people of Paraguay from one of our best-performing country operations."

Claro and Nucleo respectively acquired two blocks for around $24 million. Both operators have also pledged to use the spectrum to continue expanding their 4G networks.

Licences were awarded by regulator Consejo Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Conatel) between 17-21 December 2017.

The spectrum blocks were:

Block C: 713MHz-718MHz/768MHz-773MHz;

Block D: 718MHz-723MHz/773MHz-778MHz;

Block E: 723MHz-728MHz/778MHz-783MHz;

Block F: 728MHz-733MHz/783MHz-788MHz;

Block G: 733MHz-738MHz/788MHz-793MHz;

Block H: 738MHz-743MHz/793MHz-798MHz; and
