Cable hub Fortaleza becomes Brazil’s second IXP in GlobeNet deal

GlobeNet has set up a new internet interconnection point for Brazil at Fortaleza, the increasingly important landing point for cables to North America and Africa.

Fortaleza will join São Paulo as an internet exchange point (IXP) for Brazil, connecting traffic for the north and north-eastern part of the country in a deal with Brazil’s Network Information Center (NIC.br).

“A country with continental proportions like Brazil cannot rely anymore on a single IXP for its critical traffic exchange,” said Milton Kaoru Kashiwakura, special projects and development director at NIC.br. “Network operators willing to exchange traffic are welcome to connect.”

NIC.br said it had chosen GlobeNet due the strong and solid infrastructure established in the north-eastern part of Brazil, and also because of the level of availability of data-centre services, a reliable dual ring-protected fibre subsea cable system that connects North and South America, and neutrality.

GlobeNet CEO Eduardo Falzoni said: “The implementation of the new, regional Fortaleza point of interconnection highlights GlobeNet’s commitment to helping our clients expand into new markets and improving access to the internet for end-users in Brazil.”

Fortaleza is a landing point for the Monet cable, completed in December 2017 from Boca Raton, Florida, to Praia Grande in southern Brazil. The South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) is also due to connect Fortaleza to Angola in south-west Africa, where it joins the West Africa Cable System (WACS). The South Atlantic Inter Link (SAIL) cable will run from Kribi in Cameroon to Fortaleza.
