Orange launches two IP and IPX PoPs in South Africa

Orange has deployed two new IP and IPX points of presence in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Orange says the two new connections will enhance internet and mobile connectivity in the region by providing faster connection speeds and improved reliability for its wholesale customers.

“By connecting to this very large-capacity PoP, wholesale customers, regional operators and Internet Service Providers will benefit from cost-effective connections to a Tier 1 operator. Thanks to this Point of Presence that will bring content providers closer to Internet users, the customer experience is set to improve.” said Pierre-Louis de Guillebon, CEO of international carriers at Orange.

Guillebon recently did an interview with Capacity’s own Jason McGee-Abe to discuss how Orange are seizing all the potential opportunities in wholesale. To access the full interview please click here.

By connecting to IP and IPX local operators are able to access the Internet & mobile services through an interconnection point with long-distance networks. Orange is offering its wholesale customers, especially telecoms operators and ISPs (internet service providers) in the region the following benefits: The first is high capacity; the next is resiliency and high-availability due to its three routes with protected backbone network (including access to submarine cables SAT3 and EASSY/SMW5; ACE to be added soon); support from by Orange-owned international assets; improved QoS (quality of service) by providing delivery content closer to customers; optimized mobile services QoS and improved roaming as the service avoids unnecessary traffic going back & forth to Europe by local processing.

Orange already holds a strategic position in this field in Africa and the Middle East, thanks to its existing IP and IPX PoPs in Amman and Abidjan. Following the launch of these two new IP and IPX PoPs in South Africa, Orange will now be able to fully address the market’s needs.

In October of this year, Orange announced the launch of its brand into Sierra Leone for the first time, following on from its acquisition of Airtel Sierra Leone with its Senegal-based partner Sonatel.
