Telefónica and ZTE trial 5G data transport solution

Telefónica has completed a trial of transport technology supporting 5G technology at its Future Networks Lab in Madrid in partnership with ZTE.

The test saw Chinese vendor ZTE supply a new 5G transport solution that integrates fronthaul, midhaul and backhaul features on a low latency optical transport network.

The forwarding latency in the test was less than 0.5 is less than 0.5µs per node, and the protection switching time less than 1ms, meeting the requirements for 5G technology.

“The test results completely meet the expectation.” said Luis Contreras, Telefónica GCTIO, following the trial at the Spanish operator’s lab in Madrid. It is now set to carry out a phase-2 transport test, plus other verification trials for 5G end-to-end solutions.

ZTE sees 5G development as a core strategy, cooperating on 5G R&D with many high-end operators such as China Mobile, SoftBank, Korea Telecom, U Mobile, Deutsche Telekom and Hutchison Drei Austria.
