Crosslake Fibre launches marine survey on Lake Ontario

Crosslake Fibre has begun an underwater survey of Lake Ontario as part of its plan to deploy a 60km cable connecting Toronto, Canada, to Buffalo, New York.

The submarine cable system will be the first running across Lake Ontario to connect Toronto and Buffalo, and is part of a 131km high fibre count network.

Crosslake Fibre has said it hopes to bring the Lake Ontario cable into service by September 2018, bringing additional diverse and low latency connectivity for enterprises, content providers and carriers operating between the two locations.

“We are very excited to begin the marine survey as it is a very important and material milestone in the development of the system,” states Mike Cunningham, Chief Executive Officer of Crosslake Fibre.  “The marine survey is an essential step in the process of engineering the route, cable burial program, and cable design.”

The survey will be carried out by Canadian Seabed Research, who said it will take around three weeks to complete the geophysical and geotechnical route surveys. Crosslake Fibre will then look at using horizontal directional drilling at each landing station in an attempt to reduce any impact on the shorelines.

“Many marine surveys have been undertaken over the years in Lake Ontario for the development of infrastructure such as water outfall pipes, intake pipes, electrical cables and civil works,” comments Cunningham.  “We need to conduct our own marine survey to account for this infrastructure and to enable us to design a low impact cable landing.”
