Singtel to stop installing copper to business customers in April as fibre takes over

Singtel is to stop installing new copper-based networks to business premises from next April, and will move completely to fibre.

The company ceased deploying copper networks to residential premises four years ago. “Fibre-based networks today are capable of offering far greater speeds and supporting a much wider range of services than the prevailing copper-based networks. Fibre also provides customers with a robust connectivity that supports unified business communication applications and smart home services,” said Wong Soon Nam, Singtel vice president of consumer products.

Singtel said it will also progressively close copper-based ADSL that support broadband, TV, digital voice and private network services. This closure is scheduled to be completed by early 2018.

“Singtel will work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure our customers will enjoy a smooth and fuss-free transition to the fibre network,” said Wong. “We will also reach out to customers through various channels to make sure they are informed of the impending change and make available a range of affordable plans to cater to their varied communication needs.”

The company said that it was taking the move in support of the Singapore government’s Smart Nation programme. Fibre can deliver speeds of up to 100Gbps and provides the connectivity needed for the programme. “We are pleased to make this technology adoption push in support of today’s digital economy and tomorrow’s connected Smart Nation,” said Wong.
