NTT and PT Telkom Indonesia launch virtualisation research project

NTT and PT Telkom Indonesia have launched a joint research and development initiative that will look at creating new network services using virtual infrastructure in the APAC region.

The APAC Telecom Innovation Initiative, or ATII, will develop technical studies ad proof of concepts around new network services as virtualisation becomes more common on networks.

The initiative was launched in Tokyo on 17 April by Tadashi Ito, SVP, head of NTT Information Network Laboratory Group, NTT, and Arief Mustain, executive general manager (EGM) of digital service division for Telkom Indonesia. It aims to add additional members going forward, including additional services providers and carriers.

In a joint statement, both companies said: “Currently, APAC service providers are faced with several common issues such as sustainability due to natural disasters (e.g., earthquakes and typhoons) and unique traffic demands/requirements due to uneven population distributions (growth/erosion of population) with a similar geography as island nations in the APAC region. With this in mind, ATII will propose new services and technologies for the APAC region.

“ATII will attempt to accelerate innovation and create new markets using information and communications technology (ICT) to benefit society with a focus on sustainable development through collaboration and promotion with various partners in the APAC region so as to realize the vision of APAC service providers/countries to lead the world economy in the future.”

ATII identified three areas in which it will launch projects focusing on the characteristics of virtualisation infrastructure technologies. The three projects are around: High Value-added Network Services; Server Platform Virtualization; and Flexible Access Network Virtualization.
