Tigo seeks to renew licence in El Salvador

Tigo has sought to renew its network operating licence in El Salvador ahead of its expiry next year.

The operator has opened talks with the government of El Salvador to discuss the license, which it has held for more than 25 years, according to reports in the country.

Tigo El Salvador currently holds two approved 45MHz licences, but both must be extended for a term of 20 years, according to current laws.

The government has entered a series of talks with companies in the sector to discuss conditions around investment in the country, and the future of telecoms licences, according to La Prensa Grafica.

Tigo El Salvador CEO Marcelo Aleman said: “"We are working closely with the Government to renew the licence. We have many points of understanding and many points that are still being negotiated, but we see it on the right track and we are sure that we will continue to operate in El Salvador.”

Tigo has been a major investor in the county, having announced a $1 billion investment plan that will see it transform its network and potentially launch 4G services between 2017 and 2020. It has already deployed LTE technology but claims it needs more spectrum to be made available in order to expand its services.

"Why are you going to discuss (use) more spectrum, if you're not sure you're going to renew," Aleman added, according to the report.
