Vodafone introduces 500Mbps fibre to northern Iceland

Vodafone Iceland has announced users in the northern parts of the country can now access ultra-fast broadband.

Vodafone Iceland (Fjarskipti) has announced that many users in the northern parts of the country can now enjoy ultra-fast fibre-optic services with maximum downlink speeds of 500Mbps.

The operator said that the top speeds, however, are currently only available in the villages of Akureyri and Dalvik, and the municipalities of Thingeyjarsveit, Grenivik and Eyjafjardarsveit.

A report in TeleGeography said that Vodafone is the largest fibre-based access provider in Iceland.  Vodafone Iceland provides its services using the infrastructure which is provided by three firms: Gagnaveitu Reykjavikur (GR), Gagnaveitu Skagafjardar (which was taken over by wholesale provider Mila in April 2013) and Tengis.
