Nokia and T-Mobile edge closer to LTE speeds of 1Gbps in lab tests

T-Mobile and Nokia claim they recently achieved downlink speeds of close to 1Gbps using T-Mobile's current LTE network.

Nokia and T-Mobile have reportedly got nearer to LTE speeds of 1 Gbps in a demonstrations conducted at T-Mobile's Bellevue, Washington labs using Nokia's 4.5G Pro technology. In a post on the company’s official blog, T-Mobile US chief technology officer Neville Ray said the operator recently achieved downlink speeds of close to 1Gbps using its LTE network.

The demonstration used three carrier aggregation on bands 2 and 66. According to the blog the demonstration was carried out on Nokia's LTE eNodeB radio access kit.

At present the network provides speeds up to 400 Mbps. T-Mobile has already launched carrier aggregation and modulation to provide ultra-high speed services and a superior customer experience to its subscribers nationwide.

The joint demonstration of Nokia's 4.5G Pro successfully proved that the use of all three of the above technologies will allow operators to significantly enhance LTE and prepare for the path to 5G. The technology allows operators such as T-Mobile to take advantage of major increases in speed and capacity where and when they need it.

Ricky Corker, executive vice president and head of North America, Nokia, said: "Use of three-carrier component aggregation with 4x4 MIMO and 256 QAM is the perfect solution for T-Mobile as it looks to optimise network performance with available spectrum. With this demonstration, we are preparing the T-Mobile network to launch the highest speeds possible."
