Sparkle, LITC upgrade Italy-Libya cable to 100Gbps

Telecom Italia’s Sparkle and the Libyan International Telecommunications Company (LITC) have upgraded the 570km bilateral cable connecting Libya to Europe via Sicily to 100Gbps.

The enhancement of the cable system, which came about as a result of increasing demand of advanced services between the Libya and Europe, will support local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in providing their eyeballs and the corporate segment with a better internet experience as well as a range of more advanced connectivity services.

“This upgrade is the result of a longstanding and consolidated partnership between Sparkle and LITC. It also proves once again the vital role of Sicily as the natural and most efficient European hub for the Mediterranean, Africa and the Middle East”, says Alessandro Talotta, chairman and CEO at Sparkle.

Mohmoud Alaujali, chairman of LITC, added: “LITC trusts that the upgrade of submarine system will play a major role to enhance the telecommunication services in Libya and deliver efficient bandwidth between Libya and Europe. The recently growing demand for increased data in Libya requires high speed access. Consequently, the transition to 100Gbps transmission technology provides huge bandwidth and network scalability and leads to support LITC in fulfilling wholesale customers’ bandwidth requirements.”

Sparkle is the first operator to have introduced the 100Gbps technology between Europe, the Middle East and Africa in 2015 and this upgrade is another important milestone in support of the growing demand of advanced services between Europe and the Mediterranean.

Earlier this year Sparkle enhanced GÉANT’s network connectivity with a 2.5Gbps circuit from Marseille, France, to Annaba in Algeria.
