Telstra launches global network for broadcasters and content companies

Telstra is launching a media network to allow broadcasters and content developers to distribute their material around the world.

The company announced what it calls the Telstra Global Media Network at a conference in Amsterdam today, but the service will not be available internationally until early 2017.

The network will be run from Sydney but there will be master control rooms in Hong Kong, London, New York and Los Angeles, said Trevor Boal, head of broadcast services at Telstra.

“The rapid growth of video on-demand consumption, particularly in Asia, has triggered a surge in demand for content with the number of unique channels estimated to reach nearly 30,000 globally by 2023, a more than 400% increase from 2013,” said Boal.

Telstra will use its network of subsea cables, 40 satellites and four teleports, and broadcast operations in the new service, which will be able to deliver live and recorded video content.

“With the Telstra Global Media Network customers can easily book services online and choose the level of support they need from self-service to dedicated 24/7 monitoring,” said Boal, speaking at the International Broadcasting Convention.

“Network reliability is crucial when it comes to live broadcasting which is why we have designed our global media network with a geographically diverse dual path ring that allows traffic to be automatically diverted if there is an interruption on one part of the network.”

He added: “Expanding our presence in this market is a priority for Telstra’s enterprise business and we are investing heavily to bring to market the best solutions and technology for this industry.”
