Bharti Airtel optimises 30,000 base stations through its Open Network Initiative

Bharti Airtel has optimized 30,000 base stations and upgraded 9,000 sites under its new Open Network initiative.

Bharti Airtel claims it has optimized 30,000 base stations and upgraded 9,000 sites under its Open Network initiative since it was launched in June this year.

The Open Network initiative is designed to enable the general public to have access to Airtel’s entire mobile network information through an interactive online interface and users can also provide their feedback to improve the Operator's network. The programme is part of Airtel’s Project Leap, a nation-wide network transformation drive under which the company has announced plans to invest in building what it calls a future-ready network.

“Airtel received feedback and suggestions from millions of customers across multiple Open Network portals the company claimed: Open Network portal, myAirtel app, Airtel Call Center and Airtel Stores. Based on the feedback, Airtel engaged with these customers to improve and optimize the network for them and their surrounding areas. Thousands of leads for installation of new network sites were also generated,” the company said.

Airtel is also deploying a range of innovative technology solutions including small cells, indoor solutions, Wi-Fi hotspots and carrier aggregation technologies to improve network experience inside buildings. Over the next three years, the Company plans to deploy over 1, 00,000 such solutions,

Airtel is swapping its legacy networks and base stations with smaller, more compact and efficient technologies that will significantly improve customer experience. All these modern base stations will use a single radio access network to manage multiple spectrum bands.

The Company is creating more network capacity through acquisition of additional spectrum and deployment of fiber. Airtel plans to cumulatively deploy more than 550,000 Kms of domestic & international fiber in order to drive down latency, improve customer experience and serve the growing demand of data services for years to come.
